Cyle Larin hat-trick gives Orlando City fine win at New York Red Bulls

Cyle Larin notched a hat-trick as Orlando City secured a 5-2 MLS victory over the 10-man New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena on Friday evening. Larin opened the scoring on 24 minutes with a glancing header at the near post from Kaka's corner, the Brazilian back in the starting line-up having recovered from a thigh strain sustained on international duty. Dax McCarty got Eastern Conference-leading New York back on level terms five minutes later, also with a header, only for 20-year-old Canada forward Larin to restore the visitors' lead two minutes before half-time with a cool finish from substitute Carlos Rivas' through-ball. Arsene Wenger will be mightily pleased to have got past Tottenham in the League Cup in midweek, but the presence of Mathieu Flamini as the club’s top goalscorer won’t be giving him the mirth that many on social media seem to have derived from the statistic.

Arsenal’s lack of goals is an oddity. They are registering more shots per game than last season (20.2 vs 16.1), shots on target (6.8 vs 6.0), shots in the penalty area (12.2 vs 9.0) and shots in the six-yard box (1.5 vs 0.9). Their shot accuracy is slightly down (50.0% vs 51.7%), but that does not explain the incredible loss of chance conversion, down from 16.2% to just 6.1%. Basically, they’re just missing chances and coming up against inspired goalkeepers.

Something has to give. Either Arsenal suddenly find their goalscoring streak or Wenger’s side will be out of the title race before they even laced up their running spikes. They haven’t scored more than two goals in any of their ten matches in all competitions. Leicester and Crystal Palace have both done so three times each.

“Nobody plays 60 matches in a season anymore,” was Wenger’s wonderfully self-unaware quote this week. Sanchez played 58 last season, and that doesn’t include the Copa America last season. The poor lad is in desperate need of a rest, but Arsenal’s hopes are pinned on him in the absence of a ‘wow’ striker.

Last month, Wenger also detailed exactly what made the Chilean such a special player. “What Sanchez has is in the first two yards is that he is lightning quick,” he said. “He has that explosive attitude linked with his spirit, which makes him even more spectacular.”

Unfortunately, that initial burst is exactly what will go missing at times of fatigue. Only another 50 games to go (plus internationals) until a proper rest, Alexis.

Until now, Stoke’s poor start to the season has flown under the radar. In last week’s column I described how it was foolish to expect immediate cohesion, but the concession of a two-goal lead at home to Leicester last week has caused the murmurs of discontent around the Potteries to begin.

Houghes has experience of terrible runs to start a season, having been sacked by QPR after picking up four points in the first 12 matches in 2012/13. Stoke are only at six, but failure to beat Bournemouth at home on Saturday and a brilliant last two seasons begin to feel an awfully long time ago.

They’ve spent months and months talking about eliminating mistakes, so now might be time for Sunderland to actually do so. The bad news is that Younes Kaboul is back from suspension.

Wayne Rooney
Having scored against one Championship defence in midweek to register his first goal in six months, Rooney has another chance to do the same on Saturday.

Southampton
A whopping great win in the Capital One Cup, but now time to replicate that excellence in the Premier League. With his side in 16th, and having already played two promoted clubs and a rotten Newcastle side, Ronald Koeman will demand that his side beat Swansea at St Mary’s and begin their ascent up the table.

Mamadou Sakho
Dejan Lovren’s injury should finally give Sakho an extended run in Liverpool’s first team. There are many who believe he should never have been away. I’m one of them.

Harry Kane
Liverpool’s near-collapse on Wednesday evening saved me expressing my concerns over Kane’s own form.

Paul Merson included the striker in his combined Tottenham and Arsenal XI on the basis that “he is not a one-season wonder”, but we’re yet to see significant evidence to the contrary. Kane will surely not fall too far back into the shadows from whence he came, but it’s also easy to detect that his confidence is low. It’s now eight club games without a goal.

During Kane’s glorious five months between October 23 and March 21 he scored an astonishing 25 goals, 19 of which were in the Premier League. During that period, Kane registered a conversion rate (shots to goals) of 31.2% and a shooting accuracy of 60.7%. Since then, those figures have dropped to 6.25% and 43.75%.

In the near future we will find out which of those two runs was unsustainable.

Brendan Rodgers
When Rodgers sat down to his Coco Pops last Saturday morning, he mused at what the next seven days would hold. Ever the optimist, he anticipated winning both the Saturday and Wednesday lottery jackpots, but also surmised that regulation victories over Norwich and Carlisle United would set up Liverpool’s season.

‘Beat Villa next Saturday and we could be second in the league,’ Brendan said to the portrait of Brendan in the lounge, whistling You’ll Never Walk Alone as he went to fetch the papers in bright orange trousers. ‘If you’re standing out, you’re outstanding,’ he chuckled to himself and his sartorial conspicuousness. ‘And I’m outstanding alright.’ Yes, this would be a good week. A leaf had been turned, a corner turned. A character built.

If Liverpool don’t beat Aston Villa, they could be as low as 16th in the Premier League on Saturday evening. Amid all the noise of Carlo Ancelotti and Jurgen Klopp lies a group of players playing far below potential and a manager on the precipice.

For a manager who lives through faux philosophy and managerial speak bluster, losing your job on the back of a defeat to Tim ‘go out there and play’ Sherwood would be a body blow.

As we detailed here, Sherwood basically claimed that he deliberately had his Villa side pumping the ball long to Rudy Gestede during the first half against Birmingham on Tuesday. It looked terrible (Gestede seems unable to control the ball) but, when Villa then improved during the second half, the manager was happy to take the credit. His post-match look of ‘I made that happen’ pride was like a mother waving her child off for the first day of big school.

Little note of advice to Sherwood for Saturday, then. Liverpool are better than Birmingham, and so can’t be relied upon to not scupper the ‘plan’ by scoring in the first half. Better opt for Strategy B – playing well for the whole match.

Adidas f50 and 11Pro Go “Limited Edition” – The No Dye Pack

Another set of extremely fresh colorways has been released by the folks at adidas, although you have to look closely to see what is going on with these. We are talking whiteout to the fullest extent, with the cleanest of paint jobs placed on top of two iconic adidas boots; the 11pro and F50.

Welcome in the Adidas No Dye Pack, the latest release out of the “Limited Collection“, following on from the recent launch of the adidas Primeknit 2.0. In this latest pack, both boots have been made from special material to highlight sustainability. adidas is pushing the bar forward for ‘green tech’ by making boots which have zero chemical and pigment substance, without any colored substrates to underline the environmentally friendly concept.

Being that they are limited edition, overall there have been 3,000 pairs made and released to market.

We are not quite sure how the special materials will play out on these boots from a performance perspective, from visuals it seems like they might offer a slightly different type of touch on the ball. But we do have a general breakdown on both silos to offer in case you are considering a pair.

With f50, there are obviously two main talking points with this boot; the DribbleTex upper texture and the soleplate configuration.

On top of the Hybridtouch upper, adidas has added a 3D DribbleTex print. It has texture and actually gives the upper material some additional strength. Note here that in turn, this makes them slightly more rigid to the touch. Scratch that and let me restate, the upper is still very, very soft and flexible but it doesn’t match the feel of the previous adiZero F50 release.

When you consider the style of player these boots are ultimately intended for, improving traction is an important factor to consider. This is especially true when it comes to maximum acceleration through quick turns. You need to be nimble, yet connected to the surface so you can chop and release at ease to get out of tight spots. In the past, adidas has kept it relatively simple with the SprintFrame. This time around, the design has been dramatically warped and now we see an almost two tier tooth system come into play.

Celtic's hopes of a domestic treble were extinguished as David Raven sent Inverness Caledonian Thistle into their first-ever Scottish Cup final.

The Hoops will feel a sense of injustice after Caley Thistle's Josh Meekings escaped a red card with Celtic leading 1-0 through Virgil van Dijk.

But it was Celtic who lost a man when keeper Craig Gordon was sent off.

Greg Tansey's penalty and Edward Ofere put Caley Thistle ahead, John Guidetti levelled, then Raven secured the win.

That close-range finish three minutes before the end of extra time denied the Scottish Premiership leaders the chance to lift the Scottish Cup for a 37th time and add to the Scottish League Cup they had already secured.

Instead, it was third time lucky for Caley Thistle in a Scottish Cup semi-final and it is John Hughes' side who progress to the 30 May final against Championship outfit Falkirk.

Hughes not surprisingly stuck with the same outfield personnel that held Celtic to a 1-1 league draw last weekend but appeared to wrong-foot his opponents by switching to a more ambitious formation with two up front.

With poise and slick passing, the Highland side quickly dispelled any thoughts of a rearguard strategy and had Celtic looking anything but Scottish champions elect in the opening minutes.

Celtic manager Ronny Deila was forced into some frantic arm-waving on the touchline and it had the desired effect as Celtic were shaken out of their early jitters.

A blistering Nir Biton drive crashed off the outside of the post and a strike from Leigh Griffiths, given a starting role ahead of Guidetti after his midweek hat-trick, was pushed away by goalkeeper Ryan Esson.

Now exploiting that additional space in midfield, the extra spring in Celtic's step had Caley Thistle repeatedly exposed on the counter attack.

When Gary Warren hauled down James Forrest a couple of yards outside the penalty box, Van Dijk's sublime curling free-kick over the defensive wall gave Esson no chance as it crashed into the back of the net off the inside of the near post.

Powerful drives from Stefan Johansen and Kris Commons had Esson, starting in place of the injured Dean Brill, making claims for the man of the match award amid waves of Celtic attacks before the half finished in controversy.

When the ball fell to Griffiths at the back post, Meekings' outstretched hand prevented the striker's header finding the net, but referee Steven McLean did not blow his whistle.

The Caley Thistle defender should have been sent off and, instead, it was Celtic who were left short of a man 13 minutes into the second half.

Marley Watkins beat Adam Matthews to a through ball and was pulled down by Gordon, with Tansey beating substitute goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska from the resulting penalty.

Celtic were bolstered by a sense of injustice, but with left-back Graeme Shinnie and midfielder Ryan Christie in inspirational form, Caley Thistle were in the ascendency as the game entered extra time.

The otherwise anonymous Ofere drove low past Zaluska from Watkins' knock-down to give Caley Thistle the lead, but then Esson misjudged substitute Guidetti's free-kick and allowed it to bounce in front then behind his prone frame to give Celtic renewed hope.

However, having already missed an open goal to restore the lead, substitute Nick Ross made amends by setting up Shinnie to fire across goal for the waiting Raven to power a winner past Zaluska that will go down in history alongside that moment 15 years ago when the-then First Division outfit knocked Celtic out the same competition.

Football's masked men: Paolo Maldini, Fernando Torres, Paul Gascoigne

After a masked Cesc Fabregas netted a late winner for Chelsea at QPR, we take a look at some other famous footballers to have donned headwear on the field...
Fabregas isn't the first Chelsea player to pull on a protective mask - Petr Cech, Demba Ba and John Terry have all had to slip on a shield. However, one of Fernando Torres' finest moments for the club came with his face partially hidden by a mask. The Spain international scored a vital goal in the Europa League semi-final second leg against Basel in 2013 to help Chelsea to the Amsterdam showpiece.
England's maverick midfielder Paul Gascoigne broke his cheekbone when he was elbowed by Netherlands captain Jan Wouters in a 1994 World Cup qualifier. Gazza was forced to wear a rather rudimental face mask to protect the injury for club and country for the remainder of the season.
Suave Italian defender Paolo Maldini wasn't looking so stylish in 2003 after breaking his nose against Inter in the Milan derby. The AC Milan legend was laid low for a couple of weeks before returning to the field for the club's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Ajax wearing a protective mask.
Former Germany captain Michael Ballack was an imposing presence in the centre of midfield even before a broken nose forced him to pull on a menacing black mask. The protective shield - which matched up with his Bayer Leverkusen strip - added to the air of intensity around him.

Jonas Gutierrez has also worn a mask on the field - although the Newcastle midfielder prefers a Spider-Man version to the typical protective gear. The Argentina international has marked goals for the Magpies by pulling the mask out of shorts - and promptly getting booked by the referee.

"It all started in Spain when I went to the cinema and a little boy asked me to score a goal for him," he explained. "So I told him I would put a Spider-Man mask on for him, as that was his favourite film. In the next game, I scored so it carried on."

Malky Mackay praises goalscorer Jermaine Pennant after Wigan win

Wigan boss Malky Mackay lauded two-goal hero Jermaine Pennant after his "sensational" first-half free-kicks inspired Latics to a 2-1 victory over Rotherham.

The visitors broke the deadlock in the 31st minute thanks to a wonderful dead-ball strike from Pennant after James McClean was brought down on the edge of Rotherham's box.

Just five minutes after opening the scoring, the former Stoke man repeated the feat from a near-identical position after Marc-Antoine Fortune was fouled less than two yards outside the area.Rotherham managed to pull a goal back in the second minute of first-half stoppage time when Matt Derbyshire nodded Ben Pringle's cross into the back of the net, but Wigan held on to claim three valuable points.

Relegation-battlers Wigan have now won their last four away matches on the spin and sit just six points behind Rotherham.

Mackay was delighted with the result and singled out Pennant for praise.

He said: "Jermaine Pennant's delivery on both (free-kicks) was sensational.

"It's not until you look at that and look at it again that you see exactly what he did, and how he has executed those free-kicks.

"Great credit to him for the way that he's come into the football club and shown great character, personality and humility to come in."

Rotherham looked dangerous in the second period but failed to find a way past the often-inspired Ali Al-Habsi, who pulled off a remarkable double save from point-blank range two minutes before the end to prevent substitute Jordan Bowery from earning the hosts a point.

Mackay acknowledged the contribution made by his goalkeeper and defence.

He said: "We played our way into the game in the second half and had a couple of chances, but then Bowery comes on and I knew they would do something different.

"I thought my centre-backs stood really firm as far as that was concerned, and barring Al-Habsi's fantastic double save, they didn't actually challenge our goal in the second half, so I've got to be very, very pleased with the performance."

Rotherham boss Steve Evans appreciated the brilliance of Pennant's strikes but was unhappy with referee James Linington's decision to award the free-kick that led to Wigan's first goal.

Evans said: "They were two wonderful free-kicks. You can say if the first one is a free-kick, we should give football up. It's embarrassing for the referee.

"It's not a free-kick. We have got the benefit of having looked at it and if people want to go diving around and getting free-kicks then Wigan are welcome to them."

Evans felt his side were not at the races in the first half but improved dramatically in the second period.

He added: "I thought in the first half we were a bit average, if I can use that expression.

"I think in the second half we were fantastic. We put them to the sword but couldn't find a way to get the second goal."
